Top 10 Halloween Scary Horror Movies on Netflix Streaming - October 2011

Here are Netflix Streaming's Top 10 Halloween Scary Horror movies for you to get ready for the big day on Tuesday this weekend. If you're REALLY looking for a Halloween-based scary movie, you need to look no further than our #1 on this list, because it really gets you in the spirit!

Red State: Netflix Streaming Surprises

Click to watch the movie on Netflix streaming here!

When I first heard that Kevin Smith was making a horror film, I got really excited. I have been a fan of Kevin Smith throughout his entire career (well, now that I think of it, not entirely as of late...) but I've enjoyed most of his movies. I really like the way he writes dialogue (what he's known for) and it's fun to see the depths of characters he can create.

The thing that can make a horror film great IS the character development. As in, I'm not going to care about the characters in your film if you haven't made me care in some way. This seems very obvious, but character development (or even just a reasonable amount of exposition) is completely lacking in most of the current generation of horror films. It's not cool that 'torture porn' movies like Human Centipede have come to the forefront of horror within the industry.

Red State is not torture porn, and I'm very happy about that. In fact, I honestly don't know how much of this is even a horror movie, in the end. The first half or so is absolutely a horror film, but after that, the horror tension kind of fades and it becomes something else.

That's not to say that I wouldn't classify this as a horror movie. I definitely would, but I'm just saying that you shouldn't go into this movie (like I did) expecting the entire movie to be full of scares and the like, because if that's what you're going in expecting (like I did) you're probably going to be a little disappointed.

If you go in with an open mind though, you're going to really get a lot out of this movie. The tension build up of the first half of the movie IS amazing, and you really do get stressed out during it. The acting is pretty great, and the movie is actually stacked with a lot of recognizable people (ie John Goodman). Add it to your queue if you're looking for something that's exciting and fun, and doesn't go the 'torture porn' route.

Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon: Netflix Hidden Gem Surprises

Click to watch the movie on Netflix streaming here!

It takes a lot for me to find a movie and feel this great about wanting to recommend it as one of the better hidden gems on Netflix streaming.

My friends and I call October "scary movie month" and try our best to fill as many nights as possible with an assortment horror and terror flicks, and it's always nice to find one that none of us has seen before. This was the case with Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, and it's a sure thing to be a new addition to the collection that we normally watch every Halloween season.

This movie is great! As the norm of this Netflix streaming blog, I'm not going to indulge too much on the details of the film, because as always, I think that you're going to get more out of it if you watch it for yourself with an open mind, but I will say this: I think this movie is incredibly creative in the sense that Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, and Freddy Krueger are real people within this film's universe and are referenced frequently (no you don't see them...). The main character in the film looks up to these people as role models, and idolizes them.

This movie is FUNNY. I laughed aloud many times while watching this, and even though it's very funny, it IS indeed a horror film. The only thing I can really think to describe it, is think of Scream in terms of being a satire still being able to successfully work out a scary aspect as well.

You desperately need to watch this movie, I know you'll enjoy it if you're a fan of the horror genre, or are just looking for an intriguing new movie to watch. Add it to your queue!

Paranormal Activity: Netflix Streaming Surprises

Click to watch this movie on Netflix streaming here!

Many, many of you have heard of the Paranormal Activity phenomenon by now, especially with the huge success of the following sequels (prequels?) that followed this film up. Needless to say that they have become the current generation of "scary movie series" within our culture (I assume the previous was the Saw series, right?

But when I watched this movie, it hadn't yet become the outstanding success that it's known for today. I remember watching this movie when it wasn't very well known, and a lot of [dumb] people still thought that it might actually be real. (Is this where I take out and put on my hipster sunglasses?)

I don't mean to kill the mood for anyone, but if you still think any of these fake-camera movies are real, you have some major growing up to do. And/or maybe you need to get outside and see more movies. Or like, turn on the Internet once in your life.

Anyway, this movie was great. I remember watching and loving The Blair Witch Project when I was younger and it first had come out, and this has a very similar style and nature to it. I recently watched the sequel to this film (which is ALSO currently on Netflix Instant) and it simply didn't measure up to this original.

I have yet to see the third act in the series, but from what I hear, it's actually pretty good, and gives what (is assumed) to be a good closure to the story begun in this film. If you haven't yet been able to experience this movie, you should add it to your queue and watch it before Halloween season is over! You're actually beginning to run out of time at this point so get started.

But when you do watch this movie, make sure you watch it with the lights off.

The Perfect Host: Netflix Streaming Hidden Gems

Click to watch the movie on Netflix streaming here!

If you're looking for a hidden gem of a horror/thriller to watch, look no further than The Perfect Host. David Hyde Pierce (Niles from Frasier) is absolutely excellent in his role as 'the perfect host' in this film about a man on the run from the law.

The movie is about a man who was just involved in a crime, and he cons his way into David Hyde Pierce's house, leading to immeasurable amounts of tensity.

I'm keeping this incredibly vague because I went into it not knowing anything about the movie, and that made it so much better to watch. There are a ton of plot turns and so forth (which might seem odd, considering the primary setting is David Hyde Pierce's home in the film) but nonetheless, it's an exciting, outside-the-box film that kept me at the edge of my seat the entire time. Very rarely am I introduced to a movie that really kept me guessing until the very end, and this is one of those movies.

Add it to your queue if you're in the mood for something fun to watch, and you have an inkling to watch something on the horror and/or thriller side of things!

"Dear World" Graphic

This "Dear World" photoshopped graphic has been floating around. I like it.

Qwikster? Scratch that.

Well, to anyone who's been paying any attention whatsoever to the entire "Qwikster" situation, it should come as no surprise that Netflix has decided that it was a bad idea to split the DVD and streaming into two separate companies.

Everyone from the very get-go was very disturbed by the idea of having to split up their queues into two different websites, and the frustration was only compounded by the raise in prices recently, and the loss of Starz.

But, alas, the inevitable has come to fruition, and Netflix has posted on the official blog their explanation, including the following statement:
It is clear that for many of our members two websites would make things more difficult, so we are going to keep Netflix as one place to go for streaming and DVDs.

This means no change: one website, one account, one password… in other words, no Qwikster.

While the July price change was necessary, we are now done with price changes.

We’re constantly improving our streaming selection. We’ve recently added hundreds of movies from Paramount, Sony, Universal, Fox, Warner Bros., Lionsgate, MGM and Miramax. Plus, in the last couple of weeks alone, we’ve added over 3,500 TV episodes from ABC, NBC, FOX, CBS, USA, E!, Nickelodeon, Disney Channel, ABC Family, Discovery Channel, TLC, SyFy, A&E, History, and PBS.

We value our members, and we are committed to making Netflix the best place to get movies & TV shows.
So there you have it. Good news, nonetheless.
