Netflix Surprises: The House of the Devil

Click to watch here!

If you've been following my posts so far, you know that I really like to get into the Halloween season. Yesterday I was looking through the possible horror movies I could watch, and Netflix suggested I watch this film. I gave it a shot, and it's incredible!

It heavily pays homage to the 1980s horror genre - from the music that's played, to the font style of the credits. Everything about the movie simply felt as if it was released about 25 years ago (in a good way).

The problem with horror movies today is that they obviously rely too much on gore and loud surprise noises. This movie does neither, and relies heavily on bringing the audience slowly but surely into the story by gradually raising the tension as the movie goes along.

I don't want to give too much away, but this movie is a great horror film because it's actually horror. Too many "scary" movies these days are actually terror. This movie is actually very horrifying, because the way it's directed, you really feel the same emotions as the main character as you're brought into the setting.

It was a great surprise for me, and if you're looking for something to add to your Instant Queue on this Halloween eve, you're not going to do too much better on Netflix than by streaming this movie. I enjoyed it, and I hope you do too. We suggest it because it certainly was a surprise to us!

A League of Their Own: Netflix Surprises

Click to watch here!

This film is about a bunch of girls playing baseball. If you're not turned away from that statement alone, then this movie is great and you should add it to your queue.

If you are turned away, you should relax a little. This movie is about what Major League Baseball was like during World War II. During that time, a majority of the men who would have been able to actually play in the league were across seas or in the military somewhere. Instead of shutting down the league altogether, it was decided that women should play on all the males' behalves.

The film stars Tom Hanks as the drunken coach (who was unable to fight in the war), Geena Davis, Rosie O'Donnel, and... Madonna. But seriously this is a great movie, even if Madonna is in it.

This was one of those movies that used to always play on cable TV every weekend, and you'd turn it on and watch it because, hey, Tom Hanks is awesome. I'm a big baseball fan myself, so I really like watching any movie involving the sport. Weirdly enough, this really does take a good approach to actually filming the sport, and if you're still trying to find a reason you should watch, that should be it.

It's a classic, and well worth streaming on Netflix. It's one of the few truly watchable classics available for streaming on Netflix Watch Instant.

Shout out to netflixfan.blogspot.com for linking to us today, we really appreciate it!

Netflix Surprises: TiMER

Click to watch here!

TiMER's another one of those movies that no one has seen, but Netflix Instant Streaming's inner-suggestive tool said that I would give a high rating to. I'm not one to really "like" romantic-type comedies, so I was a little put off at first.

But this movie is astounding. For being a romantic comedy, it's incredibly well acted, and the story is very original, albeit a little illogical.

The movie is about this invention called a TiMER. Everyone gets it put in their wrist, and it's a biological clock that gives you a countdown to the exact day that you meet your soul mate. Then, on the day of, when you see your soul mate, it rings.

The drama comes in because in order to have a countdown, the person you're supposed to end up with also has to have one installed, and the main character's countdown hasn't started yet.

It's very fun to see the people cope in a society where everything is predetermined and there's not really any risk involved. Yes, there are a lot over philosophical undertones, but that really doesn't get in the way of anything. It really is just a straightforward romantic comedy, but it works in a way I haven't really seen in a romantic comedy before.

Add this streaming movie to your Instant Queue immediately. Maybe you'll have to wait a few weeks for Halloween season to pass before you're in the mood for something like this, but once you are, take advantage of it, because it's one of the best movies on Netflix streaming. It's an excellent story that most anyone can enjoy.

How to Connect Netflix to TV - Best System to Stream Netflix on TV with

As hopefully you know by know, Netflix has the ability to be watched on your television set at home, not simply on your computer or cell phone.

A lot of people ask what the best device to  stream movies and TV shows on sets at home. Our recommendation is that people use the Nintendo Wii to do so. Our reasoning for this is that, along with being the cheapest of the Xbox 360, Sony PlayStation 3, and Nintendo Wii trio, there are also some other aspects that we specifically like.

Xbox 360's internet service "Xbox Live" is a great community for multi-player games, but outside of the games, the only really attractive aspect of the service is that Netflix subscribers can simultaneously stream TV shows and movies together in a "party." This is a cool thing to do if you have friends who also subscribe to Xbox Live, but there aren't an incredible amount out there (outside of younger demographics).

Also, Xbox Live requires a rather hefty fee to use (although you can probably work to find it as low as $50 a year). Nonetheless, we find this to be an unattractive attribute considering we're simply talking about using the Netflix Watch Instant streaming service.

We specifically like the Nintendo Wii because every generation of the Nintendo Wii has a wireless WiFi capability. I have an older version of the Xbox 360 at my place, and it can be kind of difficult having to always deal with an Ethernet cord somewhere in the room, curving and curling around corners to reach our router.

Also, Nintendo Wii (like the others) does not require a disc to stream anymore. This makes it even easier to use. And, when selecting, you can sit and use the Nintendo controller just as if you would any remote. We really do like the fact that the controller is really intuitive as a "Netflix remote."

Overall, throughout our experience, we enjoyed using the Nintendo Wii for Netflix, and recommend it as the best console or best system for connecting Netflix to your television set. We believe you're not truly getting the most out of your Netflix subscription unless you're watching something on your home TV!

Netflix Surprises: Californication (television)

Watch it here!

For a show starring the famous X-Files actor David Duchovny, this show is about as far away from X-Files as possible. But, I guess that's to be expected considering the fact that actors usually try to break away from the perceptions that people have about them and blah blah blah.

This hidden gem of a show is awesome because it's so real. Duchovny stars as Hank Moody, a current bachelor who's a famous author, living in California. For some reason, even though he's an author (of books), a lot of people seem to know who he is, and he seems to be semi-famous.

The show follows the trials and tribulations he has overcoming alcoholism and the balance of trying to make his on-and-off-again girlfriend and daughter happy. The show has a rather depressing plot line, but for some reason, is extremely funny.

The Hank Moody character says what is on his mind, at all times. That's one of the best parts about the show. After a short while, you realize that the main character is one of the most charismatic and witty characters you've ever seen (especially in a TV show), and it really helps bring the tone to something that doesn't make it miserable.

Very rarely on the show do I feel uncomfortable due to the awful circumstances, simply because Duchovny's character has such a way of making the  most out of the worst, in a sort of anarchistic-mindset kind of way.

I absolutely recommend you find it and put it in your Instant Queue for streaming. It's a hidden gem that I was a little nervous about (especially because of the Red Hot Chili Peppers title), but am so glad I checked it out because it's one of the best TV shows on Netflix. It's one of those shows that, once you run out of episodes to stream, you're checking the calendar to see when the next season is about to start. It's certainly one of the best TV shows to stream on Netflix and I really can't wait for the next season to start.

Netflix Disc-free Streaming on Nintendo Wii and PS3 This Week

As of this week, it has been announced that Netflix's Watch Instant service will now be available through the Nintendo Wii and PS3 this week without the use of a disc. Now, customers will have the ability to choose from the wide variety of streaming movies and television shows without having to put in a disc each time. It appears that now, all you have to do is download the application from each console's marketplace.

Along with this, it has been announced that each console's user interface within the Instant Streaming application will be changed and adapted to what will make it easier to use. This includes search functionality and a rise in movies that have an option of being watched with subtitles.

This sounds like good news for everyone, as it can sometimes be annoying to have to put in a disc every time you want to stream movies. We fully expect that this is just the first of many steps to help the streaming capabilities on all consoles improve over time.

Netflix Surprises: The King of Kong

Click to watch here!

If you're anything like me, when you hear the word "documentary" in a description of a movie, you're pretty much turned off on the spot. We're like this because, most of the time, documentaries have to do with nothing we're interested in.

But what if there was a documentary about a guy trying to break the Donkey Kong arcade game world record? Would you watch that? Of course, because it's an awesome idea for a documentary. And look, it's available on Netflix streaming.

Steve Weibe got laid off, and after that, he just played Donkey Kong all day all the time. He got really, really good at it, and decided to try to take a run at Billy Mitchell's long-running record. The thing is, Mitchell is a complete jerk who will do anything and everything to retain the top score in the world. A bitter rivalry ensues and is completely documented in the film.

By the end of the movie, you're surprised how much you actually care about a stupid high score in a video game. Even if you're not that interested in documentaries, I'd still recommend watching The King of Kong on Netflix streaming.

You will hate this guy.

If you love the documentary format, then this is absolutely one of the best Netflix streaming movies out there for you to watch. If you're not the biggest fan of this style of storytelling, it still might be worth a shot, especially if you have a little nerdiness in you as gamers like I do.

It's becoming increasingly difficult with Netflix Watch Instant streaming movies and streaming TV shows continually growing array of movies to find the "good ones," so this site was designed to help find those hidden gems that you might not have watched without us! We hope to continue to suggest to you the best movies on Netflix.

Netflix Surprises: SLC Punk

Watch it here!

A hidden gem I'd like to talk to you about today is a movie called "SLC Punk." I noticed today that it's currently on Netflix streaming, and you should give it a shot.

The film is about a couple of recent college grads, Steve (played by Matthew Lillard) and Heroin Bob (Michael Goorjian), who do basically everything in their power to be different in their little town of Salt Lake City (that's what SLC stands for, see!).

These characters are so into punk rock music that they decide to completely flip their old lifestyles to follow it. this means dressing the part, cutting their hair into Mohawks, and pretty much trying to break every law and social rule they can. As is common knowledge, Salt Lake City isn't the most socially liberal of places in the country, so this makes the two absolutely outcast in their society.

If this was the entire plot line, I doubt it would be very interesting. What made the movie a lot of fun for me to watch was the fact that the main character was an absolute genius. The rhetoric he speaks drives the story, and the narration style completely works. It makes what's going on to be less depressing and more exciting than anything.

It's a fun, thrilling coming of age type of story, and after watching it about five times already before, I'd still be willing to stream it again. I have shown this movie to some people who didn't "get it," before, so that might be a problem for some. In order to full grasp the sarcastic tone and nature of the movie, I think you have to have at least some level of awareness of music culture (or at least of punk), and of sociology. But we're talking super basics here, nothing too complicated.

Overall, I'd recommend you at least give it a shot and add it to your Instant Queue. I know for a fact that many people haven't heard of this movie, and it could be that surprise hidden gem you've been waiting for.

Netflix Surprises: Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog

If you're not a fan of Neil Patrick Harris, you might as well stop reading now and go look at some other movies to watch. But if you think Neil Patrick Harris is hilarious and awesome (and hilariously awesome?) then Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog is the perfect Netflix Streaming hidden gem surprise for you.

The title to this movie (three mini-movies put together) might put some off, by its being strange and all. The movie starts as "Dr. Horrible," played by NPH, is talking at his own "webcam," creating a video blog. It's a slow start and a weird introduction, but it works perfectly once you come to understand the type of comedy in the film.

The movie itself is a musical (hence the sing-along aspect of the title), and the music is great. I don't like musicals, but for some reason, the music in this made it completely worth it. It's a superhero movie, and the songs are lyrically and musically toned just right to be able to be catchy, memorable, and funny all at the same time.

It's rather short in all, and that's really one of the only major downsides of it. The arch of the story is simplistic on the surface, but at the same time, complex and layered when looking deeper at the story. Maybe I'm just over-thinking it, and it's supposed to just be a fun ride, but I saw the characters within the story being metaphorical to a great extent. I loved it.

Cooler than you.
So let's recap. It's one of the best musicals on Netflix streaming. It's one of the best comedies on Netflix streaming. It's one of the best super hero movies on Netflix streaming. And it stars NPH. Why aren't you streaming this movie yet?

Netflix Surprises: Breakdown

Click to watch this hidden gem HERE.
(Warning - minor spoilers of the first half hour in this post)

If you're in the mood for a white-knuckle thriller, you're going to have a hard time finding any better movie to watch than Breakdown, let alone streaming on Netflix Instant.

The movie itself is about a married couple (Kurt Russel, awesome as ever) and some random chick (who cares who she is) are traveling down the road through a desert when all of a sudden their vehicles breaks down.

Russel (still awesome) lets his wife hitchhike a ride to the nearest town, so that she can make a phone call to get their vehicle fixed up and they can get back out on the road. The problem is, she's no where to be found.

I've probably already told you too much, because this is the type of movie where you're on the edge of your seat, always guess what could be next. It's a mystery movie in that regard, and is one of the more "fun" movies I've ever seen.

I completely recommend it, and I myself have rated it with five stars on my Netflix account. The fact that so many people I know have never seen (nor even heard of) this movie makes me sad, because it's definitely one of my favorites. You should probably go ahead and at it to your Netflix streaming Instant Queue right now, because this is one movie you don't want to miss.

Top 10 Netflix Watch Instantly Scary Movies - October 2010

Well, it's October, so what's scary and good to watch on Netflix lately? I'm going to try to rate these with the lower the number, the scarier! Let's have a look!

10. Zombieland
9. Eight Legged Freaks
8. Dead Snow
7. Darkness Falls
6. A Nightmare on Elm Street
5. The Amityville Horror
4. The Omen
3. The Exorcist
2. The Orphanage
1. Evil Dead

Netflix Surprises: Serenity

Watch it here!

Following on the coattails of our suggestion to watch the television series Firefly on Watch Instant, we also suggest you take advantage of Netflix's ability to stream the followup-to-the-series movie, Serenity.

As mentioned in the Firefly posting, the show was canceled after one season. This led to a lot of the story being left untold, and resolution to many of the characters' complex background remaining a mystery. This high-budget continuation of the story resurrects the characters for a slight retelling of what's happened up to the start of the show, and resolution to everything else.

Serenity was exactly what any fan of the Firefly television series was hoping for. Fans got to see the actual planned story arch that was planned for subsequent seasons of the show, all bunched into a movie. Weirdly enough, it doesn't feel forced, nor rushed. It feels like a genuine movie, and I would even recommend it to people who haven't watched the show (though you'll likely get more out of it if you did).

Either way, it's a brilliant sci-fi movie (which still has that slightly cheesy charm of the TV show) that I know a lot of people out there would like if they gave it a chance. It's one of the coolest movies you can stream right now, and if you're interested in action whatsoever, this might be the film on Netflix streaming for you!

Netflix Surprises: Firefly

I was very apprehensive about watching Firefly. Not only because it seemed like a rather cheesy plot line, but because it was so quickly canceled by Fox (after one season). Boy was I wrong to be apprehensive.

Firefly was canceled due to (without rambling on and on) internal managerial issues within Fox. Not because the show was bad. The show is cheesy if you take it too seriously, taking it too seriously is to miss the point.

The show is supposed to be about a group of people basically in a new "wild west," (only this time with spaceships and stuff). The group of characters on the show are on a renegade ship, who sustain functionality of their ship (and eat, etc.) by making money through doing random jobs here and there around the galaxy.

Conflict arises because, in almost every show, things don't always go exactly how they're planned. A lot of action (cheesy gunfire, mostly) occurs, but in my opinion, the witty dialogue makes up for any cheesiness that comes about.

I thought the show was great, and it just goes to show that Fox doesn't have the best marketing research department. If they did, they'd see that they really did have a niche to market this show to (as shown by the immense cult-following the show has picked up since its cancellation).

Either way, you should go out and add this television series (it's just the one season) to your Watch Instantly instant queue. If the first episode seems to be starting off really slowly and cheesy, just shut up and watch another episode. By the time you're done streaming the whole thing, you'll look back and be glad that you did (this is all assuming you like science fiction/sci-fi/syfy/fantasy/whatever, if you're not a fan of anything involving star ships, you should avoid at all costs).

Netflix Surprises: Searching for Bobby Fischer

For a movie about watching people play Chess, this movie is incredibly dynamic.

This film is about a child who is an absolute prodigy when it comes to playing Chess, but the problem is that he's a little bit of an outcast because of it. He has a lot of trouble simply trying to be normal kid, while at the same time trying to balance out winning Chess championships and not be taken advantage of.

Bobby Fischer is the name of the Grand Master Champion that the main character in the movie (somewhat) models his life after, as he is the ideal Chess player. The child narrates by explaining different parts of Fischer's life in a somewhat analogous manner, demonstrating that Chess can be applicable in almost every situation.

The way I'm explaining it now, it doesn't sound very good, but it is. By the end of the movie, you're cheering at the movement of a pawn.
You'll be cheering at this.

I absolutely recommend you stream this movie, especially in you're in the mood to find a family-oriented movie on Watch Instant. I really do find it a shame that more people don't know about this movie, and hopefully once you've finished streaming it, you'll do what we did and spread the word, as this is one of the best family movies to watch on Netflix streaming.

Netflix Surprises: Arrested Development

It certainly wasn't a surprise to me, but I know it might be a hidden gem to some.

Arrested Development is about the Bluth family. A completely chaotic, irrationally disorganized, joke of a family. The show starts as the entire family is on a large boat, partying and readying themselves to find out who the successor to George Bluth Sr. (Jeffrey Tambor) is, when abruptly the boat is raided by police and George is sent to jail.

The entire series has to do with watching how his "responsible" son (Jason Bateman) tries to take control of the situation and of the family business. The problem is that, simply, the family is absolutely insane.

As simplistic as the overall plot line seems for the show, the series has layers upon layers of incredibly funny jokes. Many of the jokes are referential to prior episodes, so I very much recommend beginning with streaming Season 1 (the whole series is on Netflix Watch Instant), and trying to avoid jumping around too much. It's simply more enjoyable this way.

When I was in college, if my friends and I couldn't find anything else worth watching on TV at the time, could always easily agree to break out the Xbox 360 and stream an episode, no matter what season. It really is likely the best TV show on Netflix streaming.

It's an absolute shame that the show was canceled, but at least we have the movie to look forward to! Now, go add it to your Netflix queue but be prepared to be angry at Fox once it's over and there's no more Arrested Development to watch (yet).
