Netflix Surprises: The King of Kong

If you're anything like me, when you hear the word "documentary" in a description of a movie, you're pretty much turned off on the spot. We're like this because, most of the time, documentaries have to do with nothing we're interested in.

But what if there was a documentary about a guy trying to break the Donkey Kong arcade game world record? Would you watch that? Of course, because it's an awesome idea for a documentary. And look, it's available on Netflix streaming.

Steve Weibe got laid off, and after that, he just played Donkey Kong all day all the time. He got really, really good at it, and decided to try to take a run at Billy Mitchell's long-running record. The thing is, Mitchell is a complete jerk who will do anything and everything to retain the top score in the world. A bitter rivalry ensues and is completely documented in the film.

By the end of the movie, you're surprised how much you actually care about a stupid high score in a video game. Even if you're not that interested in documentaries, I'd still recommend watching The King of Kong on Netflix streaming.

You will hate this guy.

If you love the documentary format, then this is absolutely one of the best Netflix streaming movies out there for you to watch. If you're not the biggest fan of this style of storytelling, it still might be worth a shot, especially if you have a little nerdiness in you as gamers like I do.

It would be cool if you could make the links to netflix a little more prominent. Took me a minute to find it.

Saw this when it first came to Netflix and line "Daddy quite playing Donkey Kong and clean my butt" was worth the rental. You are right the "Ricky's" guy is a total jerk, I knew him in the day and I saw him recently and he still thinks he is the man. Still works for mom and dad.

Glad to see it's on streaming I will watch it again for sure.
